What You’ll Experience

  • Step into the story of Florida’s coral reefs—once thriving underwater ecosystems filled with colorful corals, tropical fish, sea turtles, lobsters, and countless other marine species. Discover how these vibrant habitats have been impacted by climate change, disease, and pollution, and learn why their survival matters to both ocean life and people.

  • Through engaging exhibits and real-world conservation efforts, you'll explore how scientists are working to restore and protect these remarkable reefs. See how innovative techniques are helping grow and plant new corals, combat devastating coral diseases, and preserve the genetic diversity needed to build stronger, more resilient reefs for future generations.

About Mote Marine Laboratory

Mote Marine Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit marine research institution dedicated to advancing marine science, conservation, and education. With campuses and programs spanning Florida's Gulf Coast, the Florida Keys, and international research partnerships,

Mote's scientists study everything from coral reefs and fisheries to sharks, sea turtles, dolphins, and emerging ocean conservation challenges.

At Mote's Key Largo Coral Nursery, scientists are helping restore Florida's Coral Reef through innovative coral propagation, husbandry, and restoration techniques. The facility serves as a hub for growing and studying resilient corals while engaging the community in protecting the ecosystems that make the Florida Keys such a special place to live, work, and explore.

Everyone is invited to join one of our free public tours for a behind-the-scenes look at coral restoration and to learn how science is helping rebuild Florida's Coral Reef. Residents and visitors alike can support reef conservation by following our work on social media: @MoteMarineLab and @ProtectOurReefsvolunteering, participating in a citizen science program, or purchasing a Protect Our Reefs specialty license plate that directly supports marine science, education, and conservation programs.

Whether you're visiting the Keys for a day or call the island chain your home year-round, there are many ways to become part of Mote's mission to conserve and restore our oceans for future generations.
